1 February 2009 - Tetbury Town 2 Dursley Town 1 AET

Tetbury produced an impressive display to progress to the next round of the league cup in a game which finished in bizarre circumstances. Despite making a positive start, Tetbury went behind when Dursley scored against the run of play. The home side showed great character and continued to work hard for each other and it was no surprise when they equalised through Katy Edwards who controlled a neat pass from Sharon Townsend before executing an excellent turn and shot from just inside the area. The game remained tight and progressed to extra time with Dursley going closest with an effort which hit the post. Despite playing some excellent football, Tetbury struggled to find the killer ball in the final third. Sarah Fraser had an excellent game in the centre of the Tetbury defence, managing to combine her defence duties with some forays forward in support of her midfield. Amy Bryan was also in impressive form, producing some superb passes from the centre of midfield. Unsurprisingly, it was Bryan who despatched an inch perfect pass into the feet of Laura Merrick who showed great composure to lob the ball over the advancing keeper and into the top right hand corner as the referee was about to blow for the end of the first period of extra time. However, it became apparent that the Dursley keeper had landed badly in her attempt to make the save and an ambulance was requested. After a delay of half an hour, medics confirmed that their was no serious injury but Dursley declined the chance to complete the final 15 minutes and the result stood with Tetbury running out 2-1 winners. Tetbury must look to transfer this impressive football to their league programme if they are to move away from the relegation zone.

30 November 2008 - Tetbury Town 3 Newent Town 1

Two goals from Laura Merrick and one from Katy Edwards set Tetbury on their way to the win of the league season, a result which sees them leapfrog over Newent and out of the relegation zone. Merrick might well have opened the scoring in the first minute but her shot lacked power and was easily dealt with by the keeper. With only a solitary point on the board so far this season, Tetbury have been lacking in confidence so it was with some relief that they made it to the break still on level terms. Solid defending in the centre of defence from Aine Redmond and Steph Hill gave Tetbury the platform they needed and the longer the game went on, the more Tetbury grew in confidence. A solid start to the second half reaped reward when the combative Katy Edwards showed great determination to stab the ball home after some neat approach play. Newent reacted by producing a couple of chances but keeper Jules Caton was equal to the challenge and it was Tetbury who increased their lead through Laura Merrick who raced onto a through ball from Kate O’Connell to slot the ball home. Sharon Townsend had a superb game for the home side in the centre of midfield and Newent became bereft of ideas. Laura Merrick grabbed her second with twenty minutes remaining to make the game safe and there was a late consolation for the visitors who produced a cracking shot into the top corner. This week, Tetbury are away to Newent where they will hope to add another three points.

Tetbury Town 1 Bristol & West 2

Despite the score line, this was a much improved performance from Tetbury Town Ladies. Injury and unavailability meant that they had no substitutes to call upon, and this had a crucial impact on the final result, as Tetbury had been leading up until injury to Emma Bamford which forced her off the field. In dreadful conditions, both teams worked hard to play some decent football but the visitors created the clearer chances. Some excellent challenges from Sarah Fraser helped keep the home goal intact together with good handling from stand in keeper Steph Hill.

Tetbury had a great start to the second half, creating an excellent chance for Kate O’Connell but her shot was well saved. Minutes later O’Connell turned provider, delivering an inch perfect through ball to Laura Merrick who executed a superb finish across the keeper. Katy Edwards had another competitive game and Tetbury were looking fairly solid. Things turned sour for Town when Bamford’s injury forced them to leave just one up front and the visitors accepted the chance to push forward. Their first goal was a powerful high shot which Hill managed to get a hand to but was beaten for power and the second came with eight minutes remaining with a shot into the far corner.

These are frustrating times for the ladies who have the basis of a very good side but are continually left wanting by lack of numbers. New players are very welcome at training which is from 8pm every Tuesday at Westonbirt Sports Hall, or they can contact Gary on 07516 452774

20 October 2008 - Tetbury Town 1 Dursley Town 5

A string of excellent saves from Jules Caton could not prevent Dursley netting a total of five goals after going behind in this GFA County Cup tie at Preston Park. With a bare minimum of players the girls fought hard but didnt have the resources to help them succeed.

29 September 2008 - Tetbury Town Ladies 3 Bitton Ladies 2

The Agony & The EcstacyIt was a case of third time lucky for Tetbury, who got their first WFA win at the third attempt. Although Bitton play a division below Tetbury, a 3-1 defeat during pre-season gave the visitors the psychological advantage going in to this tie so complacency was never an option. With a vociferous crowd watching, Tetbury began nervously, struggling to gain any meaningful possession and their confidence took a further knock when Bitton took the lead on ten minutes. As they adapted to the atmosphere, Tetbury steadily grew in stature, and their efforts were rewarded when a corner from Amy Bryan fell to Maggie O’Connell who lashed her shot into the roof of the net. Just as the home side looked on the up, a speculative effort from Bitton evaded keeper Julia Caton and found the far bottom corner of the net. As half time approached, it was a crucial time for Tetbury to concede and they made good use of the half time break to regroup.

Trudie Avis had a terrific game for the home side, showing composure beyond her years and proved to be a constant threat to the Bitton defence. Substitute Sarah Fraser was introduced and she furthered Tetbury’s cause, pushing forward from right back to fire home a sweet ball from Maggie O’Connell to level the score. With the game so finely balanced, centre half Aine Redmond lead by example with some last ditch tackles as both sides probed for what was likely to be the decider. Stacey Drew had a solid game at left back and Tetbury gradually gained greater control of the game. Bitton were finally undone when Laura Merrick scored what proved to be the winner and her first goal for Tetbury with a flicked header following a shot from Jes Hearsum. Tetbury controlled the game in the final minutes and the final whistle brought scenes of jubilation, with Tetbury already looking forward to an away tie to Maidenhead United in the second round, to be played on October 12th.

Training continues on Thursdays at Tetbury Recreation Ground from 6.30pm where new players are very welcome.

Ladies Put In Hard Fought Performance

Tetbury Ladies faced a tough opening game to the season against a new look Forest Green Rovers Res. FGR settle early with strong attacking play, but Tetbury settled soon after and the score remained goaless at half time. The second half was a stetched affair and FGR broke first with a lofted 25 yard shot that hit the back of the next. Maggie O'Connell and Laura Merrick made an instant impact on the pitch after coming of the bench and with a series of "one twos" down the left flank, Maggie blasted the ball home. An excellent and entertaining game ending 1-1, which was only marred by a bad injury to Sarah Fraser. Damaged//Torn ligaments to her left ankle, which will see her out of the game for at least 6 weeks. Sarah will be missed on the pitch and the team wish her well with a speedy recovery.
